🌎 Innovation in Mobility: Specialized and Custom Programs with AFS Costa Rica

At AFS Costa Rica, we expand the horizons of intercultural education. Beyond our recognized semester and annual programs for high schoolers, volunteer opportunities, or language learning, we design short-term, thematic, and fully customized programs.

We work hand-in-hand with other AFS offices, universities, educational centers, and/or faculty to develop:

  • Faculty-Led Programs: Programs designed and led by university faculty.
  • Thematic Focuses: Experiences centered on the Environment, STEM, Democracy and Peace, Education, and more.
  • Academic and Field Immersion: Programs that function as a “living laboratory,” connecting global theory with local reality.
  • Global Up Methodology: An educational framework to process experiences through intercultural competence.

A Journey of Academic Rigor and Cultural Immersion

🌟Success Story: University of Vermont (UVM) and AFS Costa Rica

As an example of our customization capacity, we recently hosted a high-impact mobility program for Special Education students from UVM. This itinerary balanced academic rigor with deep cultural immersion:

  • Academic Exchange: Collaborative work with the University of Costa Rica (UCR) and INIE regarding special education, mental health and restorative practices.
  • Community Impact: Hands-on work with the Special Olympics in Heredia and student-led workshops at the CATIE school in Turrialba.
  • Local Connection: Homestays with local families, allowing for real immersion into Costa Rican culture.
  • Cultural Exploration: Trips to the Caribbean coast to learn about local history and conservation at the Jaguar Rescue Center.
